This course deals with the structure of organic molecules and the role of functional groups in organic reactions and synthesis. The topics considered include introduction to mass spectrometry, common spectroscopic methods of molecular structural analysis: UV, IR and NMR, aromaticity and aromatic compounds, functional group chemistry and art of organic synthesis, reactions and synthesis of alcohols and phenols, ethers, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and amines. Prerequisites: CH206. Exclusions: CH203, CH205. Notes: Students pursuing the following degrees must take this first year chemistry course: Honours BSc Chemistry, Honours BSc Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Honours BSc, Chemistry and Biology, Honours BSc Chemistry and Mathematics, Honours BSc Chemistry and Physics; 3 lecture hours, 3 biweekly lab hours.
